Matchup/Scouting Report

Gray

Red

Dutta, Rondeep: Improving. Can out-rebound and out-muscle most other big men. Shoots high percentage in paint; inconsistent mid-range shooter. Will not have good scoring or rebounding numbers against Healey. Teammates must help on defense and pick up scoring load versus Red.

Healey, Chris: Absent last few weeks, Healey will be tested early and often by Gray. Leads Red in almost every statistical category. Virtually unstoppable close to basket; excellent rebounder. Most effective driving or posting; so-so outside shot. How Red fares basically depends on how Healey plays.

Chang, Tim: Improving. Good shooter and cutter, average penetration, good rebounder for size. Matchup with Chou very important in series—Chang will need to provide lots of scoring if Healey guards Dutta, as well as outrebound his man.

Chou, Andy: Second scoring option. Most effective driving left to basket; average defender. Most reliable shooter besides Healey. Assist numbers dropped drastically during Healey’s absence. Penetration ability allows space for Healey.

Ni, Andy: Injured, status for Playoffs uncertain. If Ni’s back is bad, he may not be able to effectively produce on the court. Not statistical leader of Gray, but team leader. Receives tough assignments and is guarded by opposing teams’ superstars. Average shooter and rebounder; good passer. Must be careful of turnovers and be more assertive in close games.

Bisker, Oleg: Poor shooter, but can get hot at times. Average rebounder, above average defender. Must be careful not to take too many ill-advised shots and must be conservative with the ball. Bisker must step up his defense on opposing big men like Blue’s Sheehan or Gray’s Dutta, as Healey may have to guard the perimeter superstar.

Wu, Yifu: Excellent ball handling skills. Can create off dribble, score in the lane and pass for easy shots. Makes teammates better. Streaky shooter and average rebounder. Play improved once traded to Gray from White. Wu creates mismatches for Red, as he can drive past most of their defenders. It is uncertain as to whether he can guard Chandran or Chou.

Chandran, Arvind: Poor shooter, good perimeter defensive player. Takes too many shots. Able to adequately guard shooters due to shot blocking ability. Chandran can be a much better rebounder if he focused on it—his height and length allow him to grab boards if he plays closer to the basket. Must shut down Gray’s second scoring option.

Suarez, Damien: Very inconsistent shooter. Average passer, rebounder. Strong. Plays aggressive defense, forces turnovers. Will occasionally hit big shots. Can guard Bisker or Chandran, but provides little consistent offense.

Overall: Gray has tremendous problems matching up against Red. Gray depends heavily on interior rebounding, but Healey will negate Gray’s usual size advantage over other teams. Red’s other three players have been improving defensively the last few weeks and should play well. Since Healey will provide most of the offense, it will take the pressure of Chou and the others, who were forced to create shots for themselves in previous weeks. Now that they can slip into their true roles as the second and third scoring options, they should be more efficient with their shots. Gray’s best chance may be to go small, with Wu as the X-factor. If Wu can effectively penetrate and collect assists, Gray has a shot to upset Red. But as of now, Red is the scariest team in the playoffs.

Line: Red over Gray, 2-0.

Absent or Injured: Chia, Warren (Red)
