20th Century's Most Influential Artists
Le Corbusier: Architectural Visionary
by Andy Ni

This Swiss-French architect, painter, and writer had an immense impact on the world of architecture. Professional name, Charles Edouard Jeanneret, thought that the world of architecture was to be totally remodeled , started from "zero". He was very gifted and also a visionary. His new architecture was to be known as the International Style.

Le Corbusier was restless, and very dedicated to his work. Since he was also a talented writer, he wrote many magazines and books. Some of the topics were interior decoration, painting and architecture.

By 1950, he changed his style of architecture. His new style consisted of heavy walls of brick and fieldstone. He also used the concept of reinforced concrete, this allowed him to explore unusual shapes and construct more abstract and imaginative buildings. A very famous example would be the roof of the chapel  in Ronchamp, France.

Some of his most famous works include the design for the palace of the League of Nations, the Notre Dame du Haut, and Geneva.

Le Corbusier dominated the world of architecture from 1920. His work was very influential and inspired many generations of architects after him.

Go Back

The stairs in Villa Savoye were smoothly shaped in modern fashion.

Carpenter Center was Corbusier's only building built in the United States.
