School Ambitions: Always a Good Thing?
by Peter Kang

With school starting this month, many students will have one thing in common - goals. Whether the goals are to excel in all studies or become a great athlete, the bottom line will be to succeed. Goals are very helpful in pushing students to do their best or setting standards to measure performance. However, goals can also be harmful in a few ways. Having wrong goals or too much pressure from them may result in disastrous outcomes.

Personally, I have always approached a school year with great ambition - both for academics and athletics. This has helped me to achieve above average grades and performance, but has also amounted to greater pressures. My parents and peers expect only the best from me even when I'm not so willing, and sometimes shortcomings, though good to most people, can be depressing to myself. For this reason, my ambitions are usually kept to myself and I also try not to talk too much about my accomplishments because that will make others expect the same over and over again.

Having the wrong ambitions can become a big problem as school goes on. People with ambitions about trying to get as many girlfriends/boyfriends in a year as possible will be distracted from more important things, such as grades and activities. Also, the lack of ambitions or ambitions that do not suit your ability will harm you by making you do half as much as you are capable of doing. You should be focused on what you want to accomplish the most in order to improve your future.

Whatever you do, don't take goals and ambitions like it's a life or death situation. Treat it as something which will only push you to do better, yet you have full control over. School is an important phase in anyone's life and it's imperative that you spend your life as a student with some kind of ambition to succeed.
