Canibus Hits the Scene by Peter Kang
In an era of hip-hop where lyrics are bland with the same old toutings of one's riches or women, Canibus (real name Germaine Williams), the 23 year old rapper from Newark, NJ, has shown the music world that rap is more about the exquisite lyrics and creativity of the words. Like the old school days of Run DMC and Public Enemy, Canibus employs messages that applies to the world better than the same old money and sex.
Canibus' debut album, called Can-I-Bus featured some of his singles and new titles which discussed topics from a scientific government conspiracy to having honor for one's mother. However, the central theme of Canibus's rhymes is his claim that he is the ultimate rapper who churns out the right lyrics while other "spineless, rhymeless" MC's are corrupting the hip-hop world.
Canibus, who first became widely known in early '97, when a feud between him and LL Cool J, a noted rapper, erupted after LL thought that Canibus had dissed him on his part of the multi-rapper joint called 4,3,2,1, was hailed as a David as he skillfully tore up the Goliath in LL. His single, entitled Second Round KO featuring boxer Mike Tyson, tore up LL so well that even LL Cool J's fans changed idols. However, Canibus didn't
stop with one single and produced his album which was released in September.
In his LP collection, Canibus stresses on lyrics rather than beats. His beats are weak and hard to remember, but his lyrics make up for any other short comings. For example, the title Buckingham Palace is like poetry on a bass beat background. Canibus makes references to Great Britain while making a case that he is the greatest rapper in the world. With help from the hip-hop superstar Wyclef Jean, Canibus has been able to hit the scene with great impression.
Canibus started his rapping days as a freestyler who liked to make lyrics for parties and such. However, he became better known and began showing up in featured roles with The Firm, Wyclef, and Lost Boys. Canibus stresses creativity and interesting topics with many of his ideas coming from surfing the web.
Canibus' lyrics do contain expletives, but all are intended towards those who he sees as corrupt, no-good MC's. Canibus is a big hit at a young age and if he can keep up his "lyrical fitness", there's no telling how great of a rapper he may be, perhaps along the ranks of Biggie and 2Pac.
