Sports Craze: How School Sports Dominate Life
by Mike Petruzzi

Sports are my life. I eat, sleep, and breathe sports. I live for them. Nothing compares in life to the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. Believe me, I know. I've had my share of both. Nothing can keep me away from my sports ( except for an injury, but I don't think like that!). However, sports are such a major factor in my life that it sometimes puts education, religion, and even family on the backburner. Sometimes, this can become a major problem.

Playing one sport during the year and maintaining good grades and social relationships is nearly impossible . Now, when you multiply that by the three sports I play, the energy you exert on life is tripled. This is my dilemma. I play football in the fall, I wrestle in the winter, and finish off the year with baseball ( however, I continue to play baseball into the summer until football starts up again). As you can see, there is very little personal time for me. The only free time I get is Saturday afternoons and Sundays. Even then I am solely concerned with my athletics.

How do I make time for school, friends, and family, you ask? The little time I do get is a result of juggling my schedule. I often stay up in the middle of the night doing homework or studying. Study hall is not a time of socializing for me, unfortunately. I have to get as much work done as possible. After practices, I see my family for a bit at dinner. After that I am off to my room for the night. I sometimes manage to have phone conversations with my friends or girlfriend, but that is rare. Even more rare is when I get a chance to do some leisure activities such as watching TV or playing video games. Weekends are a time of rest for me rather than a time of fun. I try to go out as much as possible but often I am too run down from the week. Ironically, when I don't go out, I am watching sports on TV!

Such sacrifices to make time for sports will pay off in the future. Team sports prepare one for the real world. They teach responsibility and team work, which are two very important lessons. Also, playing sports keeps the human body healthy. Living a long life is everyone's goal, and it can be achieved through sports.

In conclusion, sports will forever play a major role in my life, throughout high school, into college, and hopefully the next level. That is my ultimate goal. Through perseverance and hard work, it will surely be achieved. My advice to everyone is to play some sport or another. It doesn't matter whether you are the starting quarterback on the football team or a back-up on the bowling team. You will get the same values out of both experiences.
