Why Thanksgiving Has Lost Its Meaning by Emily Chao
Thanksgiving, the last Thursday of every month, is not what it used to be. What is Thanksgiving, anyway? Nowadays, Thanksgiving is the day everyone gets together and fights over the last piece of turkey or pie. Then they gain a couple pounds as a result of overeating and grumble for the rest of the holiday vacation. Is this what the Pilgrims intended when they started Thanksgiving? Is this what they wanted people to remember? Thanksgiving has lost its meaning, and yet, no one really cares.
Have you ever scoured the supermarkets for a dead bird to feast on the day before Thanksgiving? The poultry section is completely empty. The people rush back and forth for last minute preparations. This is what Thanksgiving has been reduced to, a mad rush for food. Meanwhile, the food manufacturers are reaping in the profits.
And what's up with the parade? The Macy's Thanksgiving parade is an event many small children look forward to. While huge balloons and monster
floats come by, have these children any idea of the meaning behind the holiday? Shhh, don't ask them
now; Sonic the hedgehog is coming closer.
How about turkey in general? Whoever came up with the idea of eating turkey on Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks to all the things we have been blessed with, and now it has fallen prey to the concept of eating. Eating turkey, as a matter of fact.
Now, as Thanksgiving is approaching, everyone is getting ready for a festive and commercially infested holiday, where food is the main focus, and not the thanks. Will they stop to think about our forefathers who painstakingly settled in the wilderness to find freedom? Probably not. Will they remember the joy and unity the Native Americans shared with the Puritan pilgrims? Probably not. Oh well, maybe if we're lucky, this year, they'll eat a little less.
