MP3? Try MP4
by Neeraj Patel

These days, one of the most popular forms of music distribution on the internet is in the MP3 format. This type of sound file is compressed to a smaller size than conventional ".wav" or ".au" files, but retains the same high-quality of a CD track. However, as every good thing comes to an end, now emerging is a MP4 format, which is even more compressed.

MP3 was an abbreviation for "layer 3 mpeg," a high-quality media file made of three layers. MP4 files are more compressed versions of MP3s, and are made up of four layers. Also fused into the MP4 format are the Advanced Audio Compression (AAC) files and VQF files.

It looks that the music industry has learned its lesson from the creation of MP3 files. MP3s have become so wide in their illegal distribution that they are starting to hurt record companies. It is speculated that the RIAA will tag on new rules for MP4 distribution so they will not be used as widely as MP3s.

There are several reasons why MP4s are better than MP3s: (1) they are smaller audio files than MP3 and produce the same or better sound, (2) the player is embedded in the file – no player installation necessary, (3) all songs are distributed under the authority of their owners, (4) free redistribution of MP4 songs provides residual value to the artist or copyright, (5) each MP4 features a hyperlink back to the owners web site or a product, (6) fully-functional, built-in oscilloscope with L-R volume controls, (7) and better visualization.

Look for MP4s to become popular in the near future, with MP3s decreasing in their distribution. MP4s will be another innovation for music distribution on the internet.
