I Drink Sprite Because They Advertise...
by Justin Kil

What is it about commercials that attract teenagers? Is it the longing to be popular, looking at the attractive people in the commercial or just the entertainment? Most companies have popular sports stars, models or actresses endorsing their products.  For example, Grant Hill has been known in his Sprite commercials for quite a while now. Since the time he came out in the commercial with the guy who couldn't dunk to the "ching-ching" one where he lavishes himself in a hoard of money, Sprite has successfully marketed its product by saying it shouldn't matter who else drinks the product ("Obey Your Thirst").

Personally, I base the quality of commercials on how much they make me laugh. The funniest ones in the past few weeks have been M&M and Coca-Cola commercials. I remember the first time I saw the M&M one. It was the one when the crispy M&M dropped to the floor and said, "You can't eat candy that fell on the floor…It's a rule." In the CocaCola one, LL Cool J, tries to braid his daughter's hair. The result was just nasty. Simple commercials like that just make me cry so hard that I tear and even make it worthwhile for me to go after the products.

On the other hand, there are just stupid car commercials made by Toyota, Ford, and most of the other car companies. These are the type of commercials avoided when you flick through the channels. Personally, I just want beat the people that made those commercials. What a waste of money! Not only are they stupid, but unproductive. In addition to that, there are also those eccentric foreign commercials such as the ones made by Mentos. They are funny only because they are pathetic and run to a corny tune.

Now, there are the ones that appeal to different people for different reasons. An example is the Neutrogena commercials with Jennifer Love Hewitt. The purpose of it is to advertise their products, and their products do work, but there are some of the male gender that watch it for her. They may deny this, but there are some out there like that.

Finally, there are the commercials that give you the urge to go to that restaurant and eat. McDonald, Burger King and Red Lobster always seem to come up with commercials leaving you hungry and longing for food, unless you've just eaten. Then it leaves you sick. But often, their corny commercials are effective. Even White Castle commercials. And no matter what people say about them, their burgers aren't that bad.

The efficiency of a commercial really depends on the personalities of the audience companies are aiming for. There are those who are easily sucked in by commercials, and then there are those who just watch them as a source of entertainment. Most teens actually get sucked in by the massive media campaigns launched at them by companies. This may lead teens to believe that a terrible commercial may mean a horrible product as well. If TV commercials for movies were boring, why would teens bother to go and watch? Advertising matters greatly and teens should enjoy the exposure to attention-hungry companies because their attempts can be found to be quite amusing.
