Online gaming has become extremely popular over the few years because of easy Internet access. From the basic Westwood chats to the more advanced Battlenet servers supported by Blizzard, multiplayer games have become easy to use. Some services are free, such as Battlenet for the games Diablo and Starcraft, while others like Everquest, charge around $10 per month. Here are some games worth looking at for gamers with time during the summer:

Starcraft
Released in late 1997, Starcraft is definitely still one of the most popular games out there winning many awards such as Game of the Year, Strategy game of the year, and Real time strategy game of the year. With its easy to understand controls that are similar to its ancestors Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 and its easy to use online multiplayer support, it is one of the most user friendly games. It contains a wonderful story line with a new twist of using 3 distinct races each with different advantages and disadvantages. With the even more popular add-on, brood wars, it has increased the enjoyment of the game greatly.

Half-Life: Opposing forces
Awarded best game of the year, you play a character named Gordan Freeman in a Doom style game trying to stop what came out of a Dark Portal and to stop Gov't hired assassins sent in stopping anything in the research lab including you. Using the Quake 2 engine, it delivers incredible 3D effects with characters possessing one of the highest polygon count out there. With incredible AI it makes it a truly wonderful game and its multi-player that support up to 32 players make it even better. It is a game very easy to get used to allowing training courses to practice skills.

Sim City 3000

The map of Sim City 3000 is 4 times larger than that of Sim City 2000. It allows you to recreate a real city such as San Francisco and landmarks such as the Empire State building or the Statue of Liberty. More disasters are mad available and outside negotiations with neighboring cities were mad possible.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
Release Date: August 24, 1999
It uses a dynamic 3D battlefield in which more tactical strategies can be applied. Following the original Command & Conquer, it has GDI V. the Brotherhood of Nod once again. Also like its ancestor, it supports free multiplayer competition. Unit levels are split between normal and "veterancy" making them faster and stronger. Units also learn new abilities as they gain experience. Much dynamic colored lighting was used to set mood and attitude.

From the simple services offered by the phone line to the quick, advanced game play of the cable modem, gaming has been revolutionized from individual platforms to a worldwide network at an incredible rate. Since many kids will be stuck at home while their friends are on vacation and busy with activities elsewhere, they can still enjoy the fun provided by their computers and an on-line connection. The comfort of air conditioning and exciting multiplayer action - how sweet~.
