Personally, patriotism is not really a big deal to me. Even though I am quite happy to be living in the United States of America instead of some other country, I feel that patriotism is overrated. Do we as a
whole go out there and really want to do what Uncle Sam tells us to do? Do we really want to serve in the US military? Or do we
just want to take advantage of what America has to offer us and be proud of the US that way?
Patriotism involves being proud of our country and supporting it in many possible ways, such as waving the American flag around on Veteran's day, flying
the flag outside our houses, singing the Star-Spangled banner, standing and holding the right
hand over our hearts, and reciting the pledge of allegiance. Does anyone really know what the pledge of allegiance is??
I pledge allegiance,
To the flag,
Of the United States of America,
And to the republic,
For which it stands,
One nation.
Under god,
Indivisible,
And liberty and justice for all.
Do you really believe in this? Last year I stopped saying the pledge. I still stand and hold my hand over my heart out of respect but I don't really feel that it means anything. I am much more proud of my Chinese heritage than of the history of the US. Five thousand years compared to
a mere two hundred, there is a large difference. This may sound radical, but this is something I really believe in. Hats off to all the heroes in American history and to all the things America
has to offer, but it's not for me.
Do we really care??? If we did, we would go out there and do more than spend money on fireworks and flags on July 4th. We should be trying to see what we can do to make this country better. If we really cared, there wouldn't be this much parading around. If we really cared, then there wouldn't be this much dissension about policies and goals. Because if we all cared, we would be reaching for the same goals. Then, maybe more people will have respect and love for this country.
