A New Year Without a Resolution
by Warren Chia

Three, two, one, Happy New Year! As the new year begins, many people struggle to formulate -- and even harder, to try to keep -- a New Year's Resolution. Every new year brings many people the need to resolve things and make plans to do things better. I will lose 20 lbs! I will get straight A's! I will not beat up my little brother! But by the end of the week, we're back in the fridge looking for ice cream, we're back on the phone neglecting our homework, and we're grounded again for picking on our siblings. So tell me, because I'm really wondering, what's the use? For one thing, New Year's Day comes in the middle of the school year. For us students, what's the use of resolving to get straight A's if we've already failed the first two marking periods? Secondly, what's so special about the New Year? Can't someone resolve to become better anytime? I once heard someone say, "My New Year's resolution for this year is to actually remember it until the end of the year!" Man, that's the worst. If you make a resolution, why don't you keep it, and furthermore, why don't you remember it? Personally, I think that we should be resolving to become better people all year round. Just because the numbers on the calendar changes, it's not that big a deal as to change our lives. We have to be motivated to improve on our own, not by a big fancy ball in Times Square.
