Technology Leads the Way
by Welton Chang

The year 2000 is fast approaching and after that the year 2001, the official start of the new century, the 21st after the birth of Christ. What can we expect in the future? On the technology front, we have Microsoft and the Sun Microsystems conglomerate predicted to do battle on the information super highway. The winner of this grand battle will become the supreme leader of software development until another company comes and challenges its authority. Computers along with the aid of superior software will become mankind's most useful tool. We will be able to virtually do everything from the desktops of our homes.

On the medical front, we will see the advent of more genetic engineering, possibly human cloning and a "super" human who will have the best traits of all of us. All these things are going to cause ethics problems but aside from that will show what human beings can really do. The trend of economics is good, considering Europe's decision to go to the Euro currency. In the 21st century we may see a unified world currency and a new market for electronic business and shopping.

A mission to Mars, the International Space Station, globalization of the world's economies, and other new things will make life better for humans all around the globe. We will see the dawning of a new age. The age of new luxuries, technologies, longer living and better lives for all the people from sea to shining sea.

In the far future, the world will come into its own. We will spread to the outer planets to alleviate growing populations, we will search for other species of life in outer space, and the new millennium will be the crowning achievement in human history. Everything up until now is just setting us up for the next millennium. Too bad we won't be around to see it.
