Music Monica or Brandy? by Neeraj Patel In the spring of 1998, a song entitled "The Boy is Mine" broke into the charts and was the occupant of a prestigious #1 spot for months. The two R&B sensations who combined their talents on this hit were, of course, Monica and Brandy. After the release of their collaborated work, each star released her own solo album, both of which were also very successful. But still there's one question that people still ask: Who is better: Monica or Brandy? Brandy became popular early as teenager. The climax of her early success can be traced to 1996, to her Grammy nomination for "Baby." After that, she made several successful singles and collaborated with other popular artists to produce additional songs. Of course, she is, at the time, best known for her part in "The Boy is Mine," which often overshadows the success of her solo album afterwards. Her album, which contained "The Boy is Mine," also is the source of many other popular songs, including "Top of the World" (featuring Mase), "Have You Ever," and "Angel in Disguise." Monica was not a well-known artist before "The Boy is Mine." She made herself known to the music world after recording the slow ballad "I Will" for the SpaceJam soundtrack in 1996. For quite a while after that, she was quiet and did not release any major music. Until 1998, of course." With the release of "The Boy is Mine," Monica's fame grew tremendously, as she rose to dwell with today's R&B elite. After that, she released her hit solo album, also entitled "The Boy is Mine," which contained the popular title track. Another extremely well known song from her album is "Angel of Mine," which is constantly played on the radio and TV across the country. But who's better? Tough question. The decision depends on the type of person making it. To a person who appreciates a slightly uptempo and hiphop-flavored style of R&B, Brandy is the top choice. For those who prefer a slower and softer-styled R&B, Monica is probably better. However, no matter who the favorite is, both are extremely talented, upcoming singers. Look for more of their skills to come in the future.
