Why I Don't Believe

by Harry Chang

Christianity, a religion that millions of people believe in. Correction: A religion that millions of people are born into. While the difference is subtle, the distinction it creates is extraordinary. While millions of people are Christians, how many of them go to church every Sunday? How many go voluntarily? How many believe everything the preacher is saying? How many are actually devout Christians that live by the strict moral code? That cuts the numbers significantly.

The fact is, your being a Christian has become a nominal trait that means absolutely nothing, besides the fact you're not Jewish. The majority of Christians do not live by the principles of Christianity which is why the term has become meaningless. In fact, the few who do actually abide by the rules of Christianity are probably only a small percentage of the Christian population. I have neighbors that are Christian; they went to church occasionally and went through the confirmation and all. One of them is a senior this year and he might not even graduate after attacking a teacher. My other neighbor goes to a Catholic school because their mother doesn't like the public school system, but they don't go to church every Sunday. This is just my neighborhood. I don't deny the fact that devout Christians do exist, I just believe that they are grossly outnumbered by the "pseudo-Christians", who wear Christianity as if it were a name tag and nothing more.

Then there is the issue of Christian holidays. How many of us know the meaning of Easter or Palm Sunday or any other Christian holiday. It's absurd that we even get these days off to celebrate seeing that so few of us actually do. After all, there is probably a greater Indian population celebrating their New Year so why don't we have school on Easter and give them a day off. Wouldn't it better serve its purpose and be more beneficial to the greater number of individuals? Especially Christmas! Christmas has become the most commercial holiday I can think of. I mean, I celebrate Christmas, but I don't even call myself Christian. I just do it for the presents, like others. Ask people what Christmas means and the answer will probably be holiday shopping. When people are exhausted during the holiday season is it because of strenuous praying and thanking the Lord or is it because of the trips they make to the mall shopping for the right gift? Not the gift of love, but instead the latest toys or an expensive sweater.
