What's Up With Weed? | by Welton Chang
Walking down the street at almost any high school in the United States, you will find at least a small crowd tokin' up. Smoking marijuana has become popular once again. This current trend has lawmakers, adults, and anti-drug people pissing in their pants. All of the warnings throughout all of the years have been for nothing. Weed is back and better than ever.

Because of it's low cost and accessibility, and the fact that weed CANNOT kill you has begun to influence teens into smoking weed. Weed comes from the plant cannabis and can be grown in any basement with the right equipment. Somewhere around where you live is a weed factory, selling weed to innocent and not so innocent youth. You can even get it from your grandmother who has left some "medical marijuana" lying around on the kitchen table. Weed has been proven to be a gateway drug, and also proved to harm memory and thinking ability. But kids do it anyway. Why?

First of all, the high you get from tokin' up relieves stress. Pot heads are usually people who are calm and have only a limited sense of what's going on around them. Second, although marijuana is bad for you it cannot and will not kill you. You can smoke it 24-7 for 3 years and just become stupid. Third, there is a legality issue in the US about it and sometimes marijuana is not considered an illegal drug. Weed has many good uses and not only can the plant be used to make hemp and other products, it can relieve pain for cancer and AIDS patients.

Exemplified by the film Half-Baked (a movie about 4 pot- heads who have to get one of the group out of jail by selling pot), society's views on pot are lax. And rightly so. Although condoning addicts and abusers would be wrong, letting kids toke up once or twice a week isn't all that harmful. If you allow the children to see what they are doing is wrong, they will stop.
