Cover Story What Can Two Lines Do? by Warren Chia Two lines probably mean nothing from afar, but if you look deeply, a mere two lines affect our lives very much. Think of the possibilities that two lines can hold. The place kicker kicks the football between the two lines to win the big game. Two lines cross over an answer to tell you that you got the last question on the test wrong, dropping you to a C average. Many futures are made at the starting and finish lines on a track. The lovebirds stroll down in between two lines down the aisle to commit themselves to each other for the rest of their lives. As you can see, two lines are sometimes not just two lines. Let's examine some examples. Two lines cross to form the ever-famous "X." As everyone knows, X marks the spot. The coyote always blows himself up on the X trying to catch the roadrunner. X's show you the questions you got wrong on a test. Or should you keep parental control settings on those people that can't keep the mouse pointer from clicking on the link labeled "XXX." From Malcom X to X-Men, the X serves as identification. Personally, the X reminds me of the many X's I see after I get back a math test. The = sign is formed with two parallel lines. Does it make you feel dreadful about math? It does for me. As you can see, I'm not a very avid math fan. So… what does y equal anyway? Can the equal sign also serve to break barriers of prejudice? Are men equal to women? Are all races equal? The equal sign has many meanings, and is formed with two lines. Lastly, my favorite, the cross is formed with two lines. Long ago, the cross represented criminals because criminals were nailed to the cross. But after Jesus was nailed to the cross, the cross reminds most people in the world today of what Jesus did for them. The cross represents Christianity. Many people are seen with crosses on their necklaces, earrings, or tattooed on their bodies. The cross in general can be seen to represent religion at a whole. This obviously affects many people in the world. Now for me personally, the cross is somewhere I can go after getting all those X's on my math test because I couldn't figure out what y equals. As you can see, two lines mean a lot. Many symbols are created with only two lines, and symbols in a whole are important to our daily lives. Two lines probably mean nothing from afar, but look deeply.
